Ghost of Two Sisters

Two sisters, lost to the cold

Nellie Arnold was a slave at the Three Sisters Plantation that was owned by the Plummer family back in 1857. The owners felt that Nellie was too old to be sold so the family sent her to Washington, DC to work on another of their plantations. Two of Nellie's daughters stayed behind at the Three Sisters plantation to work. Their names were Rosa and Marjory.

Dorcas Hollow

This boiled stew raises quite a commotion

A headless ghost is sometimes seen walking just south of Petersburg. The farm of George Van Meter was located in Dorcas Hollow, which is five miles from where Petersburg is now located. Van Meter came to America from Germany. He was a carpenter who settled in Dorcas Hollow when there were only fifteen other families in the entire county. He built a cabin in isolation, far out in the woods. One day he learned that several settlers had been killed in the valley by Huron Indians. Two days later, as his family was preparing to travel into town, he saw a small band of Indians running out of the forest. He told his son to run to the cabin and take the family in to town.

Danville Museum

Danville City, Virginia
AKA: Sutherlin Mansion

The last Capitol of the South

The Danville Museum, also now called the Sutherlin Mansion, was the last Capitol of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis spent hours staring out the parlor window after receiving news of the South's surrender. It may have seemed nearly the end of the world, or at least the end of a way of life.
