Former school for delinquent girls now National Guard post Originally the estate of Napoleon's Nephew, then the State of Maryland Montrose School for Girls (A school for delinquent girls) until 1988, now a National Guard facility. Activity connected to both the original owners and the Montrose School for Girls. A huge reservoir submerged Conowingo. The Conowingo Dam was built in 1928. It began commercial operation by harnessing the power of the Susquehanna River and producing electricity. During its construction people came to watch the last of the big gates closed to collect the water behind the dam. The spectators watched trapped water began forming a 9,000-acre lake. The water spread over the land and over rooftops of a village of thirty to forty homes condemned to the water. That town was called Conowingo. Forty-one Union Soldiers killed, and they almost got Lincoln, too Battleground National Cemetery, located at 6625 Georgia Avenue, NW, was established shortly after the Battle of Fort Stevens in the summer of 1864.
