Odd antics and goings-on at this old tavern Built in 1760 by Charles Washington, George's brother, this tavern is interwoven with our nation's early history. It served as Charles' home and later, beginning in 1792, it operated as a tavern.

Waggener, a politician and lawyer in late 1800s Atchison, Kansas. Gargoyles were included in the structure of the house, some say as an item of decor, others claim that Waggener added the Gargoyles to honor a deal he made with the devil to become a man of wealth and power. Anyone who has tried to remove the Gargoyles has met a dark fate, one falling to his death on the staircase. The house is listed on the National Historical Register.
