Homes located by the Bread and Butter creek are reportedly haunted. Many people have seen ghostly apparitions in their back yards.

The British launched a series of raids on the Chesapeake Bay area in August 1814. The British planned to attack to create a diversion in the East. They wanted to send the American troops scurrying back to defend the Eastern Seaboard and which would weaken U.S. forces elsewhere.

Many slaves leave many ghosts

Montpelier Mansion is a fine example of 18th-century Georgian architecture. The home was built around 1783 by Major. Thomas Snowden. He was an officer in the Revolutionary Army. His family operated an ironworks. Snowden liked to entertain guests, some of whom were George Washington and Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams. Abigail had once described the mansion as, "a handsome, elegant home."

A gruesome companion fort

This main part of this fort was used during the Civil War. Confederate soldiers were held prisoner here. Prison conditions were horrible, and many men died. The newer part of the fort was in operation from 1918 to 1946.
