Next to the school there is now a "WAWA" gas-station / mini-mart. Next to the school there is now a "WAWA" gas-station / mini-mart. Many years ago, long before the school was ever built, the grounds contained a holding house for prisoners. It is said that many of those prisoners were mistreated and even murdered by the guards. Their bodies were buried on the plot, unmarked; later, the school was built over those graves. The paddling apparitions forewarned doom Captain John M. Harper was sailing from Wilmington to Smithville, now Southport, in 1897. He was sailing through a terrible winter storm. Harper was telling his sole passenger, a man named Scot a tale about an ancestor of his, one of three Highlanders who were captured by the British during the American Revolution and imprisoned nearby at colonial Brunswick Town.
The three captives were condemned to die, but one of them, the passenger's ancestor, made his escape. The other two were not so lucky. Old theatre with several hauntings. The Weinberg Center opened just before Christmas, 1926. The theater had 1,500 seats. The Tivoli Theatre was the largest of the three downtown Frederick movie houses. It cost over $300,000 to build, a fantastic sum in its time.
The Tivoli featured lavish decoration with marble, mosaics, velvet chairs, and crystal chandeliers. The theater had a Wurlitzer organ. It is the only one in that is still completely intact and in it original shape. The architect for the Tivoli was John J. Zink. He was a native of Baltimore.
The theater business of course steadily declined, and the Tivoli finally closed. A disastrous flood in 1976 from a nearby river caused substantial damage. The town decided to restore the grand old theater to its original glory. It took a year and a half to restore the building, but the rebuilt Tivoli reopened in 1978, now known as the Weinberg Center for the Arts, having been named for the family that donated the building to the city of Frederick.
The old theater is thought to be haunted by spirits who worked in the old theater in its past. R Todd's Inheritance - Fall 2007Greetings, Friends...
