Distinguished family, distinguished home

Marietta was the plantation home of Gabriel Duvall. He undertook the building of this modest Federal style brick house at about the same time he was appointed an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1811, a position he held for twenty-three years. Only the Judge's law office and root cellar remain of the many outbuildings that originally supported the 650 acre estate. In the early 1830s, when Duvall became guardian to his grandchildren, a two story addition was built.

Phantom dog story

Maryland has a number of phantom dogs stories. Singleton Burgee was a slave owner. All of his slaves despised him. On his deathbed, a man wearing a black cape rode up on a black horse and came to visit Singleton. The strange man stood over Singleton's death bed. The strange man queried, "Are you ready, Singleton Burgee?" and then the man was gone.

An energetic haunting

There is a house located on Columbia Pike. The house is reportedly haunted. The woman who lives there believes she is being haunted by energy from one of her past lives. The ghost does not want to leave. People have heard footsteps, and doors open and close by themselves. Sometimes the sound of furniture being moved is heard, though no furniture is actually moved.

An Indian apparition who walked through a wall and other assorted stuff

There have been several acts of violence here, including an insane asylum escapee who cut himself badly, a shotgun suicide and a shooting death. Attempted grave robbings and a reported sighting of "an Indian in the sales office walk thru a wall."
