Next to the school there is now a "WAWA" gas-station / mini-mart.

Next to the school there is now a "WAWA" gas-station / mini-mart. Many years ago, long before the school was ever built, the grounds contained a holding house for prisoners. It is said that many of those prisoners were mistreated and even murdered by the guards. Their bodies were buried on the plot, unmarked; later, the school was built over those graves.

A bloody Civil War battle.

The Wheatfield was one of the bloodiest battle scenes during the Civil War. People have heard the sounds of a battle being fought at this location.

Hallowed ground.

There are several ghosts in this graveyard, telling visitors to leave. Old part is reportedly more haunted than the newer portion.

Grave of young Matthew Whaley & Burton Parish Church

The ghost of Matthew Whaley and his young friend are still heard laughing and sometimes seen running thought the streets of Colonial Williamsburg only to disappear at the gate to the cemetary located behind the Burton Parish Church.

Samuel Green was born in 1805 in East New Market. Green's house was part of the Underground Railroad that took the slaves from Dorchester to Pennsylvania and Delaware. Mr. Green was placed in prison for five years for the crime of helping slaves escape. He was never actually caught while helping slaves escape, but he was arrested and convicted after a raid on his house turned up abolitionist literature, specifically 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
