Haunted Bed & Breakfast in Bentonsport, IA Built in 1846, and originally called the Ashland House, the property was owned by William Robinson. The Ashland House was built as a hotel for steamboat travelers on the Des Moines river by Morman craftsmen. In 1857 the house was purchased by Lewis Mason and changed its name to the Phoenix Hotel, but was known locally as the Mason House. The house served as a temporary hospital for injured Civil War soldiers and was also part of the Underground Railroad. The house and its grounds are said to be haunted by the spirits of slaves that died before reaching freedom and the soldiers who's lives were claimed while the house was a hospital. The House is located on the corner of Second and Rosemount in Frederick. The ghosts of Joseph and Elias Brunner haunt this, one of the oldest houses in town. They are the ones who built the house in 1750. Their voices, with a distinctive German accent, are still heard within the house as well as their footsteps.
A tunnel once ran from the house all the way to the creek. Joseph built the tunnel as an escape route for the family in case of Indian attack. Blue lights and apparitions within Two Civil War soldiers haunt this church. The soliders' ghosts have been seen resting at the church on rainy nights. People have seen the church's windows glow, reportedly in October around the 27th.
The church is also haunted by a ghostly young woman who is seen kneeling in the church.
