A flight of fright at night doesn't go right.

There are stories about evil people practicing black arts on the old church grounds and graveyard. The teenagers in the Bowie area know about the church and the haunting.

Civil War lingers.

South Mountain's elevation is 1,282 feet. Its cliffs are made up of primarily of quartzite. Back in 1862 and 1863, the Confederate forces occupied the mountain. Both side fought over the mountain. It was used by both sides as a signal station prior to the telegraph being invented. High and with commanding views in all directions, it made an excellent observation point.

A minor miracle.

The construction of the St. Peter's Catholic Church was begun in 1830 and was completed in 1833. It was the third church to be built in Harper's Ferry. Father Gildea had coordinated the building of an earlier Catholic church which was built in the late 1820's along Shenandoah Street, but it was destroyed by a flood. The St. Peter's Catholic Church was consecrated on May 5, 1833, by Archbishop Whitefield of Baltimore and assisted by the Rev. John Gildea and two other clergymen from Maryland. The land that the church was built on was donated by Robert Harper. Harper's last will and testament in 1782 donated four acres of land to establishing a Church.
